Bill would raise benefit for survivors

Lawmakers are considering a measure designed to better compensate law enforcement families that face the worst of circumstances.

A bill, HR 17-44, has been introduced in Congress that would increase to $250,000 the benefit paid to survivors of public safety officers killed in the line of duty. It was proposed by Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-Rhode Island), Senator Joseph Biden (D-Delaware) is working on similar legislation in the Senate.

The current amount provided by the Public Safety Officers' Benefit Act, which was established in 1976, is $151,635.

The National Association of Police Organizations is urging police officers and organizations to voice their support for HR 1744.
