MAP Honors 2005 Carl Parsell Scholarship Winners


graduated from Howell High School (Howell, Michigan June 2005) with a 3.941 grade point average. Jennifer comes from a family of law enforcement officers; her father (Patrick Sidge) is employed as a full time police officer with the Farmington Hills Police Department; and
her grandfather as well as two of her uncles have been in law enforcement.


Jennifer’s numerous academic awards include the National Honor Society, Community Service Excellence Award, Summa Cum Laude Award, President’s Academic Excellence Award, Outstanding Achievement
  in Chemistry, American History, & Academic Honors 3.9-4.0, Varsity Letter for Academics, Outstanding Achievement in Academic Honors and English Award, Academic Achievement Award, Student of the Month for Howell High School (for two years), Varsity Letters for both Volleyball and Track, Varsity Letter for Marching Band, Kensington Valley Conference Academic Honors in Volleyball and Cross Country, Howell Board of Education Excellence Award - Varsity Volleyball and K.V.C. District and Regional Champions, Kensington Valley Conference Academic Honors in Volleyball and Track, and “We the
People” State Competition Second Place Award.

Jennifer plans to attend Michigan State University with the hope of becoming a veterinarian.



     
           
           

graduated from Northville High School (Northville, MI -June 2005) with a 3.6 grade point average. Geoffrey’s father has served as a Fire Fighter for the City of Detroit since October 1974.

As is true of his fellow recipients, Geoffrey
has participated in numerous school and community activities, in addition to excelling
  at academics. Geoffrey played JV and Varsity Lacrosse; he is a member of the National Honor Society Advanced Placement Scholar, and Delta Epsilon Phi German Honor Society. In addition to tutoring elementary students in reading, he has tutored high school math and chemistry. Additional achievements include; the Appalachian Service Project, NHS Quiz Bowl, Chess and Gaming Club, German Club, Certificate of Excellence at the Student Fine Art Show, Volunteer at Northville Public Library, and an AP Scholar’s Award.

Geoffrey will attend the University of Michigan.




     
           
           

is the daughter of Donald Porrett a Police Lieutenant for the city of Port Huron. Allison's 3.9 GPA places her 25th in her graduating class of 388 (Port Huron Northern High - June 2005).

Allison's awards include the National Honor Society, President's Education Award, Outstanding Achievement in Algebra Award, Outstanding Achievement in IA/Tech Award, and Recognition for Achievement in the MEA Program.


Allison’s Math Teacher wrote that Allison was one of her “top students in her analytical geometry and trigonometry
class," noting
  Allison has been actively involved in Port Huron Northern’s SADD group (treasurer for two years, and vice president for one year, and assisting in organizing several SADD events including fund-raisers and prom activities). Adding that Allison has been actively involved in the student council, drama club, the soccer team, and has held a leadership position in the marching band by serving as drum major for two years.

Allison's involvement is not limited to her school, she has also served the community as a member of 4-H and Girl Scouts, and has been involved with Habitat for Humanity. She volunteers her time weekly at a school tutoring program and has mentored elementary school students in the St. Clair County Sheriff DARE Program.

Allison plans to attend Western Michigan University.




     
           
           

is the daughter of J. Morgan (a Detroit Police Officer) who is currently on disability due to an injury he received while on duty.

Thameka’s 3.78 GPA ranked her fifth in her senior class of 60 at Detroit Technology High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Junior Achievement, and actively involved in her church choir and youth group. She is currently a Youth Announcer.
  Thameka’s community involvement includes participation in the Special Olympics, and “Warm a Heart” – a blanket drive to supply blankets to the homeless. Each year, Thameka participates in the Black Family Development, Inc. an annual Back to School Rally and African Centered Olympics.

Two wonderful letters of recommendation accompanied Thameka’s application; both noting Ms. Hall as an excellent student and dedicated scholar. Her Honors English teacher writes Thameka is “a truly gifted student, both academically and personally.”

Thameka attends Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.



     
           
           

is the daughter of Donald Winrow a full time employee with The Wayne County Airport Authority Public Safety/Fire Division.

Sabrina graduated in the top ten percent of her (2002) graduating class from O.A. Carlson High School (Gilbraltar, MI) with a 3.824 GPA and attends Northwood University.

 

Sabrina’s awards include the Michigan High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete, National Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Finalist for Business Professionals of America Regional Conference, President’s Education Award, Wayne County Executive Academic Achievement Award, and the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

Sabrina’s many letters of recommendation describe her as personable, polite, confident, well spoken, and a leader. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management.
