Message From the Director

It must be that time again. No, I am not referring to the changing seasons or to the Tigers. It must be election time.

It is easy to detect since the daily mail brings requests from incumbents as well as those that aspire to hold office, seeking endorsements.

This time of year can also be referred to as the promise time. Promises are made, few are kept.

It is important that the views of law enforcement officers are effectively communicated to our elected officials. To do this, it is imperative that MAP participates at all levels of the political process. This is why MAP joined the other major police unions in this state when it joined the Michigan Association of Police Organizations. MAPO in turn, retained the services of Karoub and Associates consistently rated the top legislative consultant firm by Crains every year.

This is not enough. What must be done is to secure those promises that are made to us for our endorsements by following up after the election to make sure they are fulfilled. It is called accountability.

All of us must hold our elected officials accountable for their actions or, in some cases, their inactions. We must maintain contact with those who do get elected ensuring that there is follow-through on implementing the platform that they campaigned. A lack of accountability is our fault. Failure to follow through on promises made is the elected officials fault.

After all, isn't accountability of law enforcement officers a demand we face every day we put on our uniform? Shouldn't we hold our elected officials to the same standard?
