This year marked the
16th Annual Carl Parsell Memorial Scholarship Golf Outing.

(June 2006 - Awarding a total of $62,000.00 in scholarships)


Purpose

The aim and purpose of the Carl Parsell Scholarship Fund are to assist students motivated to enhance their future careers through a college education.

Committee

The Parsell Scholarship Selection Committee is an independent and impartial volunteer body that considers all nominees who meet the program's eligibility requirements. The Scholarship Selection Committee identifies extraordinary individuals and helps them pursue the learning Carl Parsell valued so highly.

2006 Carl Parsell Scholarship Awards

Dawn Luce, whose father is employed by the Ottawa County Road Commission, graduated from Ravenna High School (Ravenna, MI) with a 3.84 grade point average.

Dawn's academic awards include the Honor Roll, the National Honors Society, and Student of the Month.

Displaying leadership abilities in numerous school activities Dawn was Vice President of the Student Council, Vice President / planner of the Prom Committee, President / Vice President and Historian for 4-H, and Captain of the Basketball Team.

During her high school career, Dawn advanced to the State Finals in Volleyball and was a State Qualifier in Track.

Her community involvement includes working as a group leader for both the Ravenna Baptist Church and the Reformed Church of Ravenna. Dawn also coaches youth basketball camps.

A very impressive letter of recommendation accompanied Dawn's application; describing Dawn as an "exceptional student," and "one of Ravenna's top seniors."

Dawn plans to attend Baker College in Muskegon to pursue a degree in Marketing.
 

 


 

Chris Spencer - Chris graduated from Kettering High School (Waterford, MI) in June of 2006 with a 3.96 grade point average. His mother, Terri Spencer is employed by Clarkston Community Schools.

Chris has earned such honors as the National Honor Society, Waterford Foundation Select 50, and inclusion in Who's Who Among America's High School Students. He ranked 6th out of 260 in his graduating class, was in the 90th percentile on PSAT, has taken such classes as AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP United States History, and AP Language Arts. He has received Language Arts Honors and participated in the Accelerated Math, Technology, and Science Program. Additionally, Chris is an Outstanding Sophomore Social Studies Finalist, and received Academic Excellence in 10th and 11th Grade.

His community involvement includes tutoring, Pontiac's Arts, Beats, and Eat; church, and the Renaissance Festival.

Two very wonderful letters of recommendation accompanied his scholarship application; both describing Chris as an "excellent student," and a "terrific role model."

Chris will attend Michigan State University in the fall where he will pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.
 

 




Katelyn Stroven - Katelyn graduated from Fremont Public High School (Fremont, MI) with a 3.46 grade point average. Her sister is employed as a police officer by the Newaygo Police Department.

Katelyn's awards include Varsity Club Letters for her academics for two consecutive years, varsity club letters for wrestling as a manager, band, and the equestrian team. She also received Academic Honors, was Fremont High School Student of the Month, and a Michigan Representative for National 4-H Congress.

Katelyn has served as a Teacher's Aid, participated in the Circle of Friends group, and served as a Big Sister.

Her community involvement includes the Newaygo County 4-H program, training horses, and participation in the Newaygo County Junior Police Academy where she graduated from the week long academy holding the rank of Class Commander.


Katelyn's leadership positions included Colorguard Captain, Section Leader for Band, Equestrian Captain, and manager of the wrestling team.

Katelyn says that growing up on a Dairy Farm in Newaygo County taught her about respect and responsibility - along with giving her the opportunity to ride and show horses - stating her favorite family past-time is training young horses.

Katelyn plans to attend Muskegon Community College for her associate's degree, transfer to Ferris State University to receive her bachelor's degree, and graduate as an attorney from Thomas M. Cooley Law School before returning to Fremont to start a practice.
























Benjamin VanAken - Benjamin, whose father is employed by the Eaton Rapids Fire Department, is an Eaton Rapids High School Class of
2006 graduate. He graduated
with a 3.733 grade point average, participated in numerous activities, including Marching Band, Concert Band, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Jazz Ensemble. Ben has been active in Boy Scouts as both a cabin leader and a patrol leader, and has served as a board member for both the county's 4-H Small Animal Association and the We R - A 4-H Club.

Ben's community involvement includes assisting with the planning (from the ground up) of the county's Special Olympics. During his four years in high school he organized volunteer students, assisted with set up, and stayed after school to dismantle the tents, games, and equipment for the Special Olympics.

Displaying unwavering devotion to his community, Ben also delivers food and gift baskets monthly to those in need.

Benjamin will attend Michigan State University this fall where he will pursue a degree in Computer Science.
